Simplicity reigns as the fashion industry continues to move toward a more sustainable and responsible means of production. Debuting its first collection this spring, socially conscious brand,Matter accomplishes this and more by combining the functionality of globetrotting trousers with transparent sourcing and ethical production.
Founded on the freedom of travel and beautiful artisan designs, Matter emerges as a new alternative for the avid (or wannabe avid) traveler. With its first edition, the company sought inspiration from Southeast Asian and Indian cultures to create three styles of printed pants. Following its mission, “to inspire consumers to value provenance – to ask of the where and why something is made, and champion alternative production models for textile artisans to expand their economic opportunities,” Matter founders Renyung Ho and Yvonne Suñer are committed to creating clothing with a story.
We start small but dream big. Because of that, we’ve been lucky to find mentors and collaborators from all over the world with the same passions and values.
The designers chose pants as their first release as a symbol of empowerment and freedom (here’s hoping there’s more to come!). Each piece is connected to the origin of its production and the history behind the fabric. And in the true spirit of wanderlust, designs are committed to the practicality of living out of a suitcase, or backpack, while traveling the world. Pants come in only two sizes and require the simplest care instructions—making it as easy to wrap around your body as it is to wash and dry on the run. The edition’s vibrant prints allow for an easy transition from airport comfort to dinner on the town—the ultimate sustainability.
